GLASS ABSTRACTS
ABSTRACT GLASS
I like what you did here. You took (I’m assuming) a shot
of a piece of glass and, during the exposure, moved your
camera up and down. I’m also assuming that the
elements in your glass were vertical, and by moving
your camera up and down versus side to side you
emphasized that verticality.
This is akin to pointing your camera at a bunch of trees
and, during the exposure, moving your camera up,
down, or up and down. As a result, your photograph of
glass could easily be seen as a photograph of a grove of
trees. Either way, it’s very, very cool.
Although a lot of people don’t care for the look, this sort
of impressionistic photography is appealing to me, and
I’m looking forward to doing more of it this fall and
winter. I had not thought of applying the technique to glass, however, and so I thank you for the
inspiration.
I’m thinking that in your photo all the “good stuff” is over on the right 2/3 of the frame. When
we get over toward the left side, there’s not much there to hold our interest. So what if we were
to crop in a bit from the left? Here’s what I mean (right). See how
the line from front to back now looks cleaner? The composition is
tighter and simpler.
It’s been great, Linda, having you as part of my classes (as well as
live and in person out in the field). You’ve jumped into
photography with all four feet and (despite what you may think)
you’ve come a long, long way. I love how you challenge yourself,
don’t like how you browbeat yourself, and love seeing you
continually improve. Wishing you much success with your
photography.

I’ve posted some abstract photos I shot for a Concept Project during the Photography Workshop with The Mindful Eye in Jackson, WY.
The photos are on the Portfolio section of lindajeffers.com under the Gallery Category Classes/Workshops. Photos show larger when you choose to view them in Slideshow mode which is an option in the upper righthand corner of the Gallery page.
I’ve written a brief description in the Album.
If you care to, I’d love to hear any comments you may have about the abstract photos posted as I lose my objectivity after looking at them while they are being worked on.
Thanks.
Dr. Dorr came in to check on Ray the first day right after the good doc finished the other surgeries he had. Dr. Dorr did Ray’s first hip surgery 12 years ago.
Ray’s gonna kill me, but I had to do it. Here is the incision (with my fingers for scale).
Ray is doing really great. He walks twice a day outside and is up and down all day long, using his cane. He has his bed exercise routines down pat and has already walked about a quarter of a mile outside. No pain, just some stiffness and some kind of rash on his back and neck, maybe from the pills he is no longer taking?
I’ve been reviewing and tweaking photos from the workshop in Jackson and hope to get some up onlne tomorrow. I had fun doing abstracts and can’t wait to show you.
More photos will be posted too:
Grand Teton backpack with Tina
Our slumber party photos
And some of my class assignments from the Jackson workshop
And a few of the photos Lane took and posted during his visit to Vietnam.
Lane is going to come and visit before Thanksgiving and then we’ll all fly up to my sister Leila’s in Portland on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Thursday all of our family will drive the 2.5 hours to Leila and Dennis’ beach house on the Oregon coast where we will have a “Seafood” Thanksgiving dinner. I’m gonna have to cook a Turkey when I get home because I’m conditioned to want Turkey around this time of year.
Justin is setting up this WordPress blog so I’ll be able to email blog journal entries, photos and videos from my phone. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
The weekend has started. Playing during the day.
Well, the 3rd annual Birthday Slumber Party starts early this year. Normally this annual event goes for 24 hours, from noon Saturday to noon Sunday. But some of the girls wanted to spend the night tonight to hear me speak at the Cornfield meeting.
I’m excited and enjoying having everyone here. I’m very glad my talk is over so I can give all my focus to this birthday present the ladies give me. This event started over 3 years ago when someone asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I thought and then said, “I like you all to come for a slumber party.” They did just that, they came and we all had such a good time we made it a regular annual event.
I’m back home now since Ray picked me up midday at the airport last Saturday. Getting caught up has consumed my time since I returned. I thought I was busy at the Photography Workshop. HA. I sure wish I had time to work on the 2,000 to 3,000 photos taken in Jackson, but I don’t. This photo below is one I took of the Teton Range while driving back from our last early morning shoot.

Beautiful snow covered Teton Range in Jackson, WY.
Last Monday Ray and I drove in to LA for his pre-op doctor’s visit before Ray’s hip surgery Oct 13th.
Tomorrow we drive in to LA for the Just the Black Print meeting.
This weekend there will be about 22 of us here celebrating our 3rd annual birthday slumber party. This party is a 24 hour event. It’s fun and I can’t wait.
Monday Ray and I drive in to LA again to spend the night at a hotel nearby where Ray will have his hip replacement surgery Tuesday. We’ve been told Ray will spend Tuesday night in the hospital. Wednesday he we will drive back to the desert.
Once home I hope to find time to Photoshop some of my trip photos and post them.
It was 12 degrees and dark when I shot this photo.

4:45am timed capture of the Teton Range at Schwabacher Landing.
In a world of so many great photographers and writers, I am venturing into some unknown territories, leaving comfort zones, finally very willing to practice the art of seeing. By maintaining the practice of posting daily photos, I hope to continue learning about the possibilities that I trust are out there for the taking.
